OUR VALUES

A LEGACY OF FRIENDSHIP
Founded in 1918 by the Reverend H.W. Lee and Mr. Samuel Sullivan along with thirty-three baptized believers, Friendship Baptist Church was birthed out of a desire to form a church grounded in the New Testament. Gathering in the auditorium of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, this faithful group established what would become one of the most enduring ministries in Gastonia, North Carolina. Reverend J.R. Parrott was appointed the first pastor, leading the construction of the original church building and growing the congregation to over 300 members.
Over the next several decades, Friendship was shepherded by a succession of devoted pastors: Reverend J.C. Gilmore, Reverend S.N. Davidson, Reverend C.S. Hall, Reverend J.G. Whitfield, Reverend T.M. Walker, Reverend J. Gentile Everett, Jr., and ultimately Bishop John A. McCullough, II.
In 1940, after a fire destroyed the original structure, the current sanctuary was erected. Continued growth led to the construction of a new edifice in 1982, dedicated the following year. In 1989, Reverend John A. McCullough, II was installed as the church’s eighth pastor. Under his visionary leadership, Friendship experienced a season of unprecedented spiritual and organizational expansion. Ministries multiplied, land was acquired, and the church's influence deepened in both local and global contexts.
Major milestones included the mortgage burning in 1990, the development of robust outreach efforts, and the launch of ministries that addressed every demographic—from children and youth to singles, couples, seniors, and those facing addiction or illness. In 1996, the church embraced the full expression of New Testament worship through the gifts of the Spirit, including the baptism of the Holy Ghost and the consecration of Elders to assist with pastoral care.
In 2001, the church dedicated a 24,000 square foot Family Life Center, broadening its capacity for education, recreation, and community service. The annual Spirit Flows Conference was birthed during this time, attracting international voices and ushering the church into new dimensions of spiritual outpouring. Mission work expanded to several continents, and the church became known as a hub of excellence in ministry and outreach.
In 2007, the name officially changed to Friendship Christian Church, reflecting its inclusive and non-denominational approach while continuing to hold firm to biblical foundations. In the years that followed, Friendship continued to acquire properties, grow its staff, embrace digital innovation, and serve the community through education, social services, and vibrant worship.
Throughout Bishop McCullough’s more than 35 years of service, over 50 ministers were licensed and ordained, further advancing the Gospel. His era was marked by wisdom, spiritual maturity, and a commitment to excellence that left an indelible mark on the ministry.
A new chapter began on December 7, 2024, when Friendship installed its 9th Pastor and Leading Lady, Overseer Justin D. Ross-Hillard, I, and Pastor Amaris Ross-Hillard. Returning to the church where he once served in youth ministry, Pastor Ross-Hillard brings a bold vision for the future rooted in the legacy of the past. Together, they lead Friendship with integrity, innovation, and a passion to
Glorify God, Win Souls, and Transform Lives—a church fully alive and set to ascend for generations to come.
OUR BELIEFS
THE SCRIPTURES
We believe the Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired, and is a perfect treasure of heavenly instruction.
THE TRUE GOD
We believe that there is only one true God. He is revealed to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, each with distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature.
THE FALL OF MAN
We believe that man was created by God in a state of holiness, but through the temptation of Satan, he transgressed the command of God by free choice and fell from his original state.
THE WAY OF SALVATION
We believe that salvation involves the redemption of the whole man and is offered to all through the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ. Salvation includes regeneration, sanctification, and glorification.
JUSTIFICATION
We believe that justification is God's gracious and full acquittal upon principles of righteousness of all sinners who believe in Christ.
BAPTISM AND THE LORD'S SUPPER
We believe that Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water. The Lord's Supper is the commemoration of the death of the Lord Jesus, preceded by self-examination.
REPENTANCE AND FAITH
We believe that repentance and faith are sacred duties, wrought in our souls by the Spirit of God.
SANCTIFICATION
We believe that sanctification is the process by which we are made partakers of His holiness; that it is a progressive work; that it is begun in regeneration; and that it is carried on in the hearts of believers by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit.
REGENERATION
We believe that regeneration or the new birth is a change of heart wrought by the Holy Spirit.
THE RESURRECTION
We believe that scriptures clearly teach that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. He now exists in His glorified body, seated at God's right hand. There will be a resurrection of the righteous and the wicked. The bodies of the righteous conform to the glorious body of Jesus Christ.
THE CHURCH
We believe that a visible church of Christ is a congregation of baptized believers associated by a covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel. We observe the ordinances of Christ, are governed by His Word, and exercise our gifts.
